About the Stadium:
The American Express Community Stadium, affectionately known as "The Amex" by fans, stands as a modern beacon of football in Brighton & Hove, England. This state-of-the-art venue is the proud home of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club, a testament to the club's resilience and the unwavering support of its community. Nestled in Falmer, on the outskirts of the city, it represents the culmination of a long and arduous journey to secure a permanent home.
A Long Road Home
The story of "The Amex" is one of struggle and triumph. After the sale of their historic Goldstone Ground in 1997, Brighton & Hove Albion faced a period of homelessness, enduring temporary stays at Priory Park in London and the athletics-focused Withdean Stadium. The latter, with its limited capacity and poor sightlines for football, highlighted the urgent need for a purpose-built stadium. The club and its supporters embarked on a passionate, decade-long campaign for a new stadium, overcoming numerous planning hurdles, public inquiries, and local opposition. Key figures, including then-chairman Dick Knight, tirelessly advocated for the club’s vision. This persistent effort eventually bore fruit, with construction finally commencing in 2008 after government approval.
Modern Design and Facilities
Opened in July 2011, "The Amex" immediately established itself as a premier venue. Designed by architects KSS Design Group, it boasts a distinctive curved roof structure that aids in retaining crowd noise, creating an electrifying atmosphere. The stadium's initial capacity of 22,374 has since been expanded to over 31,800, reflecting the club's growing success and fan base. Beyond its primary role in hosting Premier League football, the stadium offers extensive conference and banqueting facilities, contributing significantly to the local economy. Its design incorporates excellent transport links, including its own railway station, making it easily accessible for match-goers.
More Than Just Football
While primarily the home of the "Seagulls," the American Express Community Stadium has hosted a variety of significant events. It has been a venue for international women's football matches, including fixtures during the UEFA Women's Euro 2022, showcasing its versatility. Rugby union has also graced its turf, with matches during the 2015 Rugby World Cup creating memorable moments. These events further cement the stadium's status as a major regional sports and entertainment hub, embodying the spirit of community and ambition that defined its creation.
