A Stadium's Genesis

The stadium, originally known as the Stadion am Sportpark, first opened its doors in 1992. It was a crucial step for SpVgg Unterhaching as they climbed through the German football divisions. Its initial capacity and facilities were modest, but they were significantly expanded and modernized in the late 1990s to meet the stringent requirements of the Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL). This transformation became necessary when the club sensationally achieved promotion to the 2. Bundesliga in 1995 and then, remarkably, to the Bundesliga in 1999, turning the venue into a contemporary arena capable of hosting top-tier German football.

Bundesliga Glory and Beyond

During their two seasons in the Bundesliga (1999–2001), the Alpenbauer Sportpark, then still Stadion am Sportpark, witnessed historic matches against giants like FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. Perhaps its most famous moment came on May 20, 2000, when Bayer 04 Leverkusen famously lost the championship title here on the final matchday, allowing Bayern Munich to snatch the title. The stadium’s current capacity stands at 15,053, including 6,800 covered seats, providing an intimate atmosphere that remains cherished by fans. In 2010, it was officially renamed Alpenbauer Sportpark following a significant sponsorship deal with the local dairy company.

Today, the Alpenbauer Sportpark continues to be the home ground for SpVgg Unterhaching, primarily hosting matches in the 3. Liga or Regionalliga Bayern.
