About the Stadium:
The Arena Zabrze, officially known as Stadion im. Ernesta Pohla (Ernest Pohl Stadium), is a modern beacon of football in the city of Zabrze, Poland. It serves as the proud home ground for one of Poland's most decorated football clubs, Górnik Zabrze, a club with a rich Polish football history.
A Legacy Born in the 1930s
The stadium's origins trace back to 1934, when it opened as the Stadion Miejski (Municipal Stadium). For decades, it witnessed countless battles and victories for Górnik Zabrze. The venue became synonymous with the club's golden era, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s, when Górnik Zabrze dominated the Polish league and made its mark in European competitions. Its renaming in 2005 honored Ernest Pohl, a legendary striker for Górnik Zabrze and the Polish national team, widely regarded as one of Poland's greatest footballers. Pohl’s scoring prowess left an indelible mark.
Transformation into a Modern Arena
In the early 21st century, the need for a modern UEFA-standard facility became evident. A comprehensive redevelopment began around 2011, transforming the aging structure into the contemporary Arena Zabrze. This ambitious project aimed to increase capacity and enhance comfort and safety. The renovation was phased, with three new stands inaugurated first, followed by the final main stand. Today, it boasts a seating capacity of approximately 24,563, providing an atmospheric setting for matches.
More Than Just a Stadium
Its contemporary design offers state-of-the-art facilities, including modern hospitality areas, media zones, and improved accessibility. It is not merely a venue but also a symbol of renewal and ambition for Zabrze and its beloved club, Górnik Zabrze. The stadium continues to be a vibrant hub for the local community, hosting not only football but also various events, cementing its role as a key regional landmark. The roar of fans within its modern stands echoes the proud history and hopeful future of Polish football.
