About the Club:
The North Wales town of Rhyl was once home to Rhyl FC, affectionately known as "The Lilywhites." For over a century, this club left a significant mark on Welsh football, characterized by periods of great success, community pride, and a memorable legacy on the pitch of Belle Vue.
Foundation and Early Years
Founded in 1879, Rhyl FC quickly established itself in various regional leagues, competing against teams from both Wales and England. Their home, Belle Vue stadium (later known as Stadiwm y Traeth), became a familiar landmark for generations of supporters. The club consistently showed resilience, building a strong connection with the local community.
The Golden Era of Glory
The early 2000s marked Rhyl FC's most triumphant period. Under manager John Hulse, they became a dominant force in the Welsh Premier League. The 2003-04 season was historic, as they achieved a treble: winning the Welsh Premier League title, the Welsh Cup, and the Welsh League Cup. This success brought European football to Rhyl, including UEFA Champions League qualifiers. A second league title followed in 2008-09, solidifying their status.
A Lasting Legacy
Despite their on-field success, financial difficulties led to Rhyl FC's unfortunate winding up in 2020. However, the passion for football in Rhyl endured. A phoenix club, CPD Y Rhyl 1879, was promptly formed, taking its name from the original founding year and continuing the football tradition at Belle Vue. Rhyl FC's two Welsh Premier League titles and four Welsh Cup triumphs (1952, 1953, 2004, 2006) ensure its significant place in Welsh football history.
