About the Stadium:
The Letzigrund in Zürich, Switzerland, stands as a testament to modern stadium design, seamlessly blending its heritage with state-of-the-art facilities. More than just a football ground, it is a vibrant multi-purpose arena that serves as a cornerstone of Swiss sports and entertainment.
A Historic Foundation
The story of Letzigrund began in 1925, when the original stadium first opened its gates. For decades, it was the cherished home of FC Zürich and, for periods, Grasshopper Club Zürich, witnessing countless memorable moments in Swiss football history. Beyond local league drama, it also hosted significant international matches and athletic events, establishing itself as a beloved landmark in Zürich.
Rebirth for UEFA Euro 2008
With Switzerland co-hosting UEFA Euro 2008, the decision was made to entirely rebuild Letzigrund. The old structure was demolished in 2006, paving the way for a sleek, contemporary venue. Reopened in 2007, the new stadium was designed by architects Bétrix & Consolascio with EM2N, boasting a distinctive, undulating roofline and improved spectator comfort. It proudly hosted three group stage matches of the championship, marking a new era for the venue.
Zürich's Sporting and Cultural Heartbeat
Today, Letzigrund continues its rich tradition as the permanent home of FC Zürich and a primary venue for Grasshopper Club Zürich. Its capacity of approximately 26,104 for football matches makes it one of Switzerland's premier stadiums. Beyond football, it's globally renowned as the host of Weltklasse Zürich, an annual athletics meeting that is part of the Diamond League. Furthermore, its flexible design allows it to transform into a major concert venue, attracting global superstars and accommodating up to 30,000 spectators for musical events. This versatility ensures Letzigrund remains at the very heart of Zürich's dynamic cultural landscape.
