About the Stadium:
BC Place Stadium: A Landmark of Vancouver Sports
Nestled in the vibrant city of Vancouver, British Columbia, BC Place Stadium stands as a beacon of architectural innovation and sporting history. More than just a venue, it's a multi-purpose marvel that has witnessed countless memorable moments, from international sporting triumphs to cultural celebrations.
A Storied Past
Opened in 1983, BC Place was initially conceived as the centerpiece for Expo 86, the World's Fair in Vancouver. Its original air-supported fabric dome roof defined the city's skyline for decades. It quickly became home to the Canadian Football League's BC Lions and various soccer teams, including the Vancouver 86ers, predecessors to today's Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The stadium also proudly hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics under its original dome.
Architectural Transformation
Following the Winter Olympics, BC Place underwent a monumental transformation. From 2009 to 2011, it was entirely re-imagined with the installation of one of the largest cable-supported retractable roofs globally. This engineering feat not only modernized its aesthetic but also dramatically enhanced its versatility, adapting to varying weather and event types. Today, it offers a truly adaptable environment for thrilling soccer matches or grand concerts.
Home to Champions and Global Events
As the proud home of Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps FC and the CFL's BC Lions, BC Place is a crucible of Canadian sports. Beyond club football, it gained global prominence hosting the final of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2015, where the United States triumphed over Japan. Its legacy will continue to grow as it prepares to be a host venue for the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026, cementing its international status.
