About the Stadium:
Welcome to The Cherry Red Records Stadium, affectionately known to many as Plough Lane, a modern beacon of football passion nestled in Wimbledon, London. More than just a stadium, it’s a powerful symbol of resilience, community spirit, and a remarkable homecoming for AFC Wimbledon. Opened in November 2020, it culminates a two-decade dream for fans who refused to let their club disappear.
A Phoenix Rises: The Journey Back to Plough Lane
The story of Plough Lane is deeply intertwined with one of English football's most controversial episodes. The original Plough Lane was the beloved home of Wimbledon F.C. for 79 years, witnessing their meteoric rise and FA Cup triumph against Liverpool in 1988. Following their relocation from Plough Lane in 1991 and subsequent ground-share, the ultimate blow came in 2002 when the FA approved the club's relocation to Milton Keynes, becoming Milton Keynes Dons. Outraged supporters immediately formed AFC Wimbledon, starting from the bottom. Their unwavering goal: to return to a stadium in Wimbledon, a mission finally realised with the new Plough Lane.
Modern Design Meets Historic Soul
The new Cherry Red Records Stadium is a testament to contemporary design, honouring historic roots. With an initial capacity of around 9,215, it's built for future expansion, potentially reaching 20,000. It boasts state-of-the-art facilities, modern concourses, and excellent sightlines. Designed to create an intimidating atmosphere, it replicates the "Dons' Den" spirit. The sponsorship by Cherry Red Records adds a unique London cultural touch, reflecting the club's diverse support.
More Than Just Football
Beyond match days, Plough Lane is envisioned as a vibrant community hub. The development includes residential properties and commercial spaces, integral to local regeneration. It serves as a focal point for the Wimbledon community, hosting events far beyond the pitch. The stadium is a living embodiment of fan ownership and relentless determination, a permanent reminder that football clubs are the heart and soul of their communities. It stands proudly as a symbol of hope and fan power, a true home for the club and its dedicated supporters.
