Gewiss Stadium
Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia
Viale Giulio Cesare 18, Bergamo, Italy
About the Stadium:
The Gewiss Stadium, nestled in the vibrant city of Bergamo, Italy, stands as a testament to football's enduring legacy and the unwavering spirit of its resident club, Atalanta BC. More than just a venue for matches, it's a pulsating heart for the community, having witnessed nearly a century of sporting drama and local passion.
A Glimpse into the Past
The stadium first opened its gates in 1928, originally bearing the name Stadio Mario Brumana, in honour of a local fascist martyr. Designed by the visionary architect Giacomo Pizzigoni, its initial structure laid the foundation for what would become a beloved landmark. Following the tumultuous years of World War II, it was appropriately renamed Stadio Comunale, reflecting its role as a public asset. Later, it became known as Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia, a tribute to Italian athletes, before its most recent transformation.
The Dawn of a New Era
A pivotal moment in the stadium's history arrived in 2017 when Atalanta BC took the unprecedented step of purchasing the venue from the municipality – a rare feat for Italian clubs at the time. This acquisition marked the beginning of an ambitious redevelopment project aimed at modernising the facility and elevating it to meet contemporary UEFA standards. In 2019, the stadium was officially rebranded as the Gewiss Stadium, following a significant sponsorship deal with the electrical engineering company Gewiss.
Modern Transformation and Passionate Roar
The ongoing renovation has been a phased endeavour, meticulously enhancing each stand to improve comfort, safety, and overall fan experience. While still undergoing final touches, the stadium currently boasts a capacity of approximately 21,747 spectators, with plans for a slight increase upon completion. It is designed to immerse fans in the electric atmosphere that defines Italian football. The roaring support for La Dea – as Atalanta BC is affectionately known – creates an unforgettable experience, making the Gewiss Stadium a true fortress for one of Serie A's most exciting teams.
