After visiting the UNESCO World Heritage city of Trier during the day, the team headed for Darmstadt in the evening to watch the Lilien take on the Werksklub from Leverkusen. The game took place in one of the smallest stadiums in the first German Bundesliga. Somewhat rustic, the back gate stands were placed on the former oval of the original Stadion am Böllenfalltor, which was still equipped with running track. A longitudinal grandstand is still unroofed and still consists of the standing room of the formerly widespread concrete steps. This season, the stadium is named after Jonathan Heimes, a fan who died of cancer the previous year.
This fan launched the initiative "You must fight" - and this slogan also applies to Darmstadt this season. Because the class preservation currently seems to be in the far distance. Thus, a victory against Leverkusen was almost mandatory this evening. But right from the start, a difference in class was apparent on the pitch. The Werkself had the game firmly under control and already after a quarter of an hour succeeded Julian Brandt the deserved Führungstreffer.
Darmstadt was in the consequence although endeavored, but a really Torgefahr there was only with some standards. The Leverkusen waited for their opportunities and in minute 56. provided Kevin Volland for the preliminary decision. After that, not much more happened in the game and numerous fans left the stadium early. In the end, a deserved defeat for Darmstadt, for which the last games of the season will probably only be a showcase.
