A sightseeing holiday in Scotland without football? Certainly not ;-)
So we took advantage of our trip to Edinburgh to watch Hibernian FC, who are currently third in the Scottish league table.
After visiting Carlton Hill in the classic Scottish drizzle, we continued our sightseeing route via the Carlton Burying Ground and the Canongate Kirk towards Holyrood Palace.
The weather improved more and more and so nothing stood in the way of a nice afternoon of football.
On the way to Easter Road, the stadium of Hibernian FC, we took the last opportunity to have a pint in a local pub. In Scottish football, there is an absolute ban on alcohol in and around the stadium.
The beer was served in disposable plastic cups, which made it a little less enjoyable.
Afterwards we made our way to the stadium, where we again managed to arrive from exactly the wrong side and had to walk around the entire stadium. Some things just never change ;-)
The stadium itself is built in a classic British style on a housing estate and seats 20,421 spectators. The game against league stragglers Dundee FC was attended by 17,926 people on Palm Sunday.
The stadium was therefore well attended. Unfortunately, they had chosen the shaded stand, which meant they always had to look enviously at the sunny seats. A few rays of sunshine would have been nice...
Edinburgh went into the game as clear favourites and also had the better share of the play. However, big chances were few and far between and it took until the 26th minute before local hero Rocky Bushiri scored from a corner kick to give Edinburgh a 1-0 lead. This was the score at the break.
The second half began just as cautiously before a few new players brought fresh impetus to Hibs' attacking play. Kieron Bowie made it 2:0 just 4 minutes after coming on as a substitute.
It was the same story in the 78th minute. Again it only took 4 minutes for substitute Dwight Gayle to make it 3-0.
The game was finally decided and now it was really only Edinburgh playing. The final goal was scored again by Kieron Bowie with a spectacular diving header.
Hibs thus celebrated a commanding 4-0 win in the last game of the basic round. While Edinburgh will continue in the Championship play-off, Dundee will have to fight to avoid relegation.
After the game, the team returned to the pub, where they toasted the victory - still in plastic cups.
