A Storied Beginning in Ağdam
Founded in 1951 under the name "Məhsul" in the city of Ağdam, Qarabağ quickly became a beloved local institution. The club played its home matches at the Imarat Stadium in Ağdam, representing the region of Nagorno-Karabakh. They achieved early success, winning the Azerbaijani Premier League in 1993, a poignant victory amidst the escalating conflict that would soon dramatically alter their fate.
The Refugee Club: Displacement and Rebirth
The early 1990s brought the devastating Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, leading to the occupation of Ağdam. In 1993, the club was forced to abandon its home and became a "refugee club," relocating to the capital city, Baku. This period was immensely challenging, both financially and logistically, yet the club persevered, carrying the hopes and memories of the displaced people of Ağdam. Their distinctive club crest, featuring the two "Karabakh horses," further emphasizes their deep roots and cultural heritage.
Rise to Domestic Dominance and European Aspirations
Following years of struggle, Qarabağ experienced a remarkable resurgence under the stewardship of head coach Gurban Gurbanov, who took the helm in 2008. His visionary leadership transformed the club into a dominant force in Azerbaijani football. They secured numerous Azerbaijani Premier League titles, starting with the 2013–14 season, and multiple Azerbaijani Cup victories, solidifying their status as the nation's premier club. Their current home ground is the Azersun Arena in Baku.
Making History on the European Stage
The club's ambitions extended beyond national borders. Qarabağ became the first Azerbaijani team to reach the group stage of a major UEFA competition, achieving this milestone in the UEFA Europa League in the 2014–15 season. Even more significantly, they etched their name into history by becoming the first Azerbaijani club ever to qualify for the illustrious group stage of the UEFA Champions League in the 2017–18 season, facing giants like Chelsea, Atlético Madrid, and AS Roma. They continue to be regular participants in UEFA club competitions, consistently representing Azerbaijan with pride and skill. Learn more about their European history on UEFA.com.
